The Central Bank of Belize (Central Bank) is pleased to announce that CRIF Information Services Belize Limited, a locally registered subsidiary of CRIF S.P.A. (CRIF), has officially been granted a license to operate as Belize’s first licensed credit bureau. The licensing of CRIF paves the way for the introduction of a comprehensive credit reporting system that will improve credit access, strengthen responsible lending practices, and promote greater financial inclusion.
“A licensed credit bureau marks another milestone in the modernisation of Belize’s financial system,” said Governor Kareem Michael. “It is a vehicle for sustainable lending, growth, and resilience, which will deliver lasting benefits to consumers and lenders alike.”
CRIF is a trusted international brand known for reliable and secure credit data management. As credit bureau operator, CRIF will be responsible for collecting and maintaining credit data from credit information providers. This data will be used to generate credit reports and scores that can help lenders make more informed, fair credit decisions and improve access to finance for individuals and businesses.
The Central Bank will supervise and regulate the credit bureau to ensure the operations meet the proper standards of credit reporting and consumer protection. The credit bureau is expected to go live later this year, following successful testing and stakeholder readiness.
