July 31, 2025

In its ongoing efforts to enhance the ease of doing business, the Central Bank of Belize (Central Bank) has further expanded the delegation of authority (DOA) to authorised dealers.

Effective 4 August 2025, customers may purchase foreign currency directly from their domestic banks for the purpose of prepaying imported goods expected to arrive in the country, without requiring prior exchange control approval from the Central Bank—up to a maximum of BZ$100,000. Transactions exceeding this threshold for prepaid imports still require approval from the Central Bank.

Under the updated DOA, authorised dealers may approve the sale or transfer of foreign currency payments for prepaid imports, provided that a valid pro forma invoice is submitted. This must be done in accordance with the provisions outlined in Exchange Control Direction Number 5 (2025).

For more information, kindly contact your domestic bank or refer to Exchange Control Direction Number 5 (2025) available on the Central Bank’s website at www.centralbank.org.bz.
