The Monetary Authority of Belize established in 1976 and as the authority that superseded the Currency Board had the sole rights to issue notes and coins in Belize.

In 1976 the first issue of currency notes under the Monetary Authority of Belize was put into circulation. The design of the notes depicts Belize’s marine and wildlife and our National Assembly building. While these are legal tenders they are outmoded.
