What Is the Instant Payment System (IPS)?

The Instant Payment System (IPS) is a new national payment platform being introduced to make sending and receiving money faster, simpler, and more convenient.

Once launched, the IPS will enable individuals and businesses to transfer funds electronically in near real-time between participating financial institutions.

The system is being developed as part of Belize's ongoing efforts to modernize the national payments landscape, support innovation, and improve access to digital financial services.

Why Are We Naming It?

A strong name helps build trust, recognition, and national identity. The Central Bank of Belize wants the public to play a role in creating a name that reflects:

  • Belize's culture and identity
  • Innovation and progress
  • Speed and convenience
  • A modern national payment system
  • Long-term public recognition

The selected name will help establish a recognizable national brand for Belize's new instant payment system and support public awareness as the platform is rolled out nationwide.

Competition Rules

Before submitting your entry, please note:

  • Entries open on 12 September 2026
  • Entries close on 12 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m.
  • Late submissions will not be accepted
  • Entries must be submitted through the official Central Bank of Belize website portal
  • Participants may submit a maximum of three (3) entries
  • All submissions must be in English
  • Entries must be original work created by the participant
Eligibility Requirements
You are eligible to participate if you:

✅ Are a Belizean citizen or permanent resident
✅ Are 13 years of age or older
✅ Have parental or guardian consent if you are under 18 years of age
✅ Submit an original name that is your own work
Submission Requirements

Each entry must include:

  • Proposed IPS name
  • Brief explanation (maximum 100 words) describing:
    • The meaning of the name
    • Its relevance to Belize
    • Its relevance to instant payments
  • Full name
  • Age
  • Phone number
  • Email address
What Makes a Great Name?

We're looking for a name that is:

  • Unique
  • Easy to pronounce
  • Memorable
  • Relevant to Belize
  • Relevant to instant payments
  • Suitable for a national payment system
  • Appropriate for long-term public use
  • Adaptable for marketing and branding

Names must not be:

  • Offensive
  • Copyrighted
  • Trademark protected
  • Generated using artificial intelligence (AI)
Intellectual Property and Usage Rights
By entering the competition, participants confirm that their submission does not infringe on any intellectual property rights or the rights of any third party.

Participants grant the Central Bank of Belize the right to use, modify, adapt, reproduce, evaluate, and register submitted names for branding, promotional, operational, and related purposes.

The Central Bank of Belize reserves the right, at its sole discretion, not to adopt or use any submitted name if legal, regulatory, trademark, branding, operational, or other considerations arise.

Judging, Selection, and Prize

The competition follows a structured process to ensure submissions are evaluated fairly and transparently, from initial screening through final winner selection and prize award.

Stage 1: Technical Screening

All entries will undergo an initial review to ensure they:

  • Meet the eligibility requirements
  • Comply with the competition rules
  • Include all required submission information
  • Are original submissions
  • Do not contain offensive or inappropriate content
  • Do not present apparent intellectual property concerns

Only entries that successfully pass the technical screening will advance to Stage 2.

 

Stage 2: Judging Panel

Eligible entries will be evaluated by a judging panel using the criteria below.

  • Relevance to Instant Payments
  • Relevance to Belize
  • Creativity and Originality
  • Branding Potential
  • Memorability

The five highest-scoring entries will advance to Stage 3.

Stage 3: Final Verification and Winner Selection
The judging panel will recommend the highest-scoring finalists based on the evaluation criteria.

Finalists will be contacted and asked to provide supporting documentation to verify their eligibility and submission details.

Following verification, the finalists' submissions will be presented to the Central Bank of Belize Executive Team for final endorsement and selection of the winning entry.
Prize and Announcement

Prize

The creator of the winning submission will receive a cash prize of BZ$1,500.

Winner Announcement

The winner will be:

  • Contacted directly using the information provided in the submission form
  • Announced through a live public announcement
  • Featured in an official Central Bank of Belize press release
  • Published on the Central Bank of Belize website
  • Announced through official media channels

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I submit more than one name?
Yes. Participants may submit up to three (3) entries.
Can I submit a name created using artificial intelligence (AI)?
No. All submissions must be original work created by the participant. Names generated using artificial intelligence (AI) are not eligible.
Can I enter if I am under 18 years old?
Yes. Participants who are under 18 years of age may enter the competition but must have parental or guardian consent. Proof of consent may be required before a prize is awarded.
Is there a cost to participate?
No. Participation in the competition is free of charge.
Can I edit my submission after it has been submitted?
No. Please review your submission carefully before submitting, as entries cannot be modified once they have been received.
Can two participants submit the same name?
If identical or substantially similar names are submitted by multiple participants, the judging panel will evaluate submissions in accordance with the competition criteria and rules. The Central Bank of Belize reserves the right to determine the eligibility and consideration of such submissions.
Will the winning name automatically become the official IPS name?
Not necessarily. While the winning submission will be recognized through the competition, the Central Bank of Belize reserves the right not to adopt any submitted name due to legal, regulatory, trademark,  branding, operational, or other considerations.
When will the winner be announced?
The winner will be announced following completion of the judging and verification process through the Central Bank of Belize's official communication channels.
